NEWCASTLE -- At approximately 9 p.m., Monday, the Bellevue Fire Department responded to a fuel spill at the Shell station in the 6400 block of Lake Washington Boulevard Southeast. Firefighters found a fueling operation that had overfilled a tank. Approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel were lost.
The state Department of Ecology and local utility were notified, and firefighters immediately investigated for spillage into the nearby storm drain. It was discovered that the fuel did enter the storm drain and ultimately to an outpour that drains stormwater into Lake Washington off of Ripley Lane Southeast.
Bellevue and Kirkland firefighters, along with the DOE, quickly deployed absorbent material at the storm drains as well as containment booms onto the water in efforts to minimize the impact to Lake Washington.
